Education — Flora Deva Herbal Apothecary
Education
Learning Through Relationship
At Flora Deva, education begins with observation.
Plants can be studied through botany, chemistry, traditional use, ecology, fragrance, history, art, and direct experience. Each offers a different way of knowing.
Our approach is not about mastering plants or finding one “correct” way to work with them. It is about becoming more attentive—to the plant itself, to place and season, to preparation and tradition, and to our own experience.
Observe first. Stay curious. Let relationship deepen over time.
Ways of Working With Plants
The Flora Deva Apothecary includes several forms of botanical preparation. They are not interchangeable, and understanding their differences is part of working with plants thoughtfully.
Flower Essences
Flower essences are preparations traditionally associated with the subtle or energetic qualities of flowers.
Unlike herbal tinctures or essential oils, they contain little to no measurable amount of the plant’s chemical constituents. Their use belongs to a tradition centered on emotional experience, reflection, and the perceived qualities of individual flowers.
At Flora Deva, flower essences hold a special place. They invite us to pay attention—to patterns, transitions, inner experience, and what a particular plant may bring into our awareness.
They are best approached with curiosity rather than expectation.
Aromatics & Botanical Perfumes
Scent is one of the most immediate ways we encounter plants.
Essential oils, absolutes, resins, hydrosols, and other aromatic materials capture different aspects of a plant’s aromatic character. In botanical perfumery, these materials are composed together to create atmosphere and sensory experience.
At Flora Deva, perfume is not simply something to wear.
It can mark an arrival, accompany a ritual, recall a landscape, or create a moment of attention.
Before asking what a fragrance is for, try asking:
What do I notice when I encounter it?

Herbal Teas
Tea offers another form of botanical relationship—one shaped by water, warmth, taste, aroma, and time.
Flora Deva Botanical Teas are created as botanical portraits of place. A blend may emerge from the climate or character of a landscape, the plants found there, or an experience that occurred within it.
Preparing tea can be wonderfully ordinary.
Steep the plants.
Notice the aroma.
Taste slowly.
See what becomes visible when you pause.
Herbal & Botanical Preparations
Oils, salves, tinctures, infused waters, hydrosols, and other botanical preparations each extract or preserve different aspects of a plant.
The method matters.
Water draws certain constituents. Alcohol draws others. Oil captures another spectrum entirely. Distillation produces yet another expression of the plant.
Learning how something was made can deepen our understanding of what we are holding.
Ritual as Attention
At Flora Deva, ritual does not need to be elaborate or prescribed.
Ritual can simply mean paying attention.
Opening a bottle and noticing the fragrance.
Preparing tea without rushing.
Taking flower essence drops and pausing long enough to observe what is present.
Walking outside and noticing which plants are flowering.
Writing down something you don’t want to forget.
These small acts turn ordinary encounters into opportunities for observation.
Learning to Notice
Rather than looking for a particular response, begin with what you actually experience.
You might notice:
- scent, taste, texture, or temperature
- memories or associations
- changes in attention or mood
- attraction or resistance
- where and how a plant grows
- what changes with season or place
- questions that arise
Not every observation needs an interpretation.
Sometimes noticing is enough.
The Flora Deva Field Library
Education continues in the Flora Deva Field Library, an evolving collection of Field Notes, Field Guides, botanical observations, human ecology, and stories from the living world.
The Field Library follows the practice of the naturalist:
Observe first.
Record what you notice.
Look for patterns.
Remain curious.
Allow understanding to develop over time.
It is where we explore not only individual plants, but the larger relationships in which they participate—landscapes, seasons, pollinators, people, culture, and place.
Working With Botanical Products Safely
Plants and botanical preparations vary considerably in composition and appropriate use. Follow the directions provided with each Flora Deva product and use only as intended.
Essential oils and other concentrated aromatic materials should not be ingested unless specifically formulated and labeled for that purpose. Avoid contact with eyes and use topical products according to their individual directions.
If you are pregnant or nursing, have allergies or a medical condition, take medication, or have questions about whether a botanical product is appropriate for you, consult an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
Flora Deva products and educational materials are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease and are not substitutes for individualized medical care.
A Living Practice
We don’t expect to finish learning about plants.
That is part of their gift.
A plant encountered in a garden may teach us something different when encountered along a trail. A fragrance changes on skin. A familiar landscape reveals something new in another season. Years of working with the same botanical can still produce another question.
Flora Deva education is an invitation into that kind of learning:
Move slowly.
Observe closely.
Stay curious.
Enter into relationship with the living world.
